I felt that driving Ian down to the clinic was the least I could do to help him - he had unloaded his whole story onto me and I had to help him in the best way I could. And if this meant I had to drive this poor man (at his wits end) to the clinic, then I'd do it.
He deserved better than this, he needed to get his life back on track. And I knew it was my job to help him. So I collected Rhys from the librarian and I took them both down to my car, which was parked in the corner of the school car park.
"Some people have all the luck!" Ian said enviously at the sight of my car. "I take it you're paid really well?"
"Nah. This is a present from my parents for doing so well in my teaching course. My car is the love of my life at the moment!" I smiled. "Come on in! I'll let you take her for a spin after we've been to the clinic if you want!"
"Really?" Ian exclaimed, and his expression brightened from his usual glum one. "You'd let me do that?"
I laughed and nodded.
"But let's concentrate on getting to the clinic first, eh?" I nodded and I got into the car. I then drove from the car park to the clinic in town. I parked my car outside it, and then nodded to Ian.
"Well here we are. I'll wait in the car and I'll give you a lift home after you get the results."
"Umm...Sean?" Ian asked quietly and shyly. "Would you mind going in with me?"
"Sure. If you want me in there with you, then I'll be there."
Ian nodded and picked Rhys up. He walked with me into the clinic, and I pushed the door open for him. We were instantly took into a room that smelt strongly of disinfectant, and the doctor was sitting at his desk. Ian explained briefly why he was here, and the doctor said he had to take a blood sample of both Ian and Rhys.
Easier said than done. Obviously Ian's sample wasn't a problem, but Rhys kicked and screamed constantly for a good five minutes before they were able to get a sample.
"We'll be back to you in about half an hour." The doctor said once the samples had been obtained. "Take a seat in the waiting room and we'll call you through once we've finished analysing everything."
Ian nodded wearily and I followed him back to the waiting room. He sat down heavily on one of the plastic chairs and slouched. I took the seat next to him and crossed one of my legs over the other. I then placed my hands on my knees.
"Why do they have to take so bloody long to do everything in this place?" Ian grumbled quietly, making me smile slightly.
"It'll go quicker than you think." I said, watching Ian play with his phone. He nodded and turned to face me.
"Thanks for coming along with me and for actually giving a damn. I don't think I've ever met anybody quite like you before."
"Well what can I say? I'm just a unique person!" I smiled. "You're a pretty cool person yourself, to tell the truth."
Ian's smile broadened from my compliment, and we continued to talk as we waited for the results of the test to come through. And then...
"Mr Watkins, your results are ready, would you please come through?"
Ian looked to me, his eyes full of nervousness and fear, so I nodded and stood up slowly. I then followed Ian and Rhys back into the room, and I stood next to Ian as the doctor leafed through some sheets on his desk. I was surprised to find Ian's hand grab hold of mine, but I figured he was just nervous to get his results so I gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.
"Okay Ian, here we go. The tests here have proved negative. Rhys is definitely not your son."
